3 Ds For Leadership Action... Dedicate, Direct, Dialogue!
"...And winged hope, with heart of fire, To gain the bliss of thy desire." - William Winter Are you among those leaders who daily lament the general lack of dedication, direction or fruitful discussion within your workplace? I'd like to suggest three strategies leaders can use to: => Instill stronger commitment to organizational goals and missions; => Sharpen the focus of managers, employees and partners on the intent or leanings of your organizational strategy; => Enrich and nurture deeper communication of shared beliefs, meanings and feelings. Dedication - Building Commitment Through Participative Strategies How often do you involve or seek the input of your associates before making a decision? Great leaders rigorously ask for and listen to the advice of their colleagues when analyzing situations, evaluating problems and formulating courses of action. Additional ways to involve your people are through the following processes: 1) Developing the strategic plan and when supervising progress through the strategic plan, 2) During your annual budget forecasting and control sessions 3) Creating the year-end performance review format, criteria and of course, when conducting the reviews themselves. Engaged, participating, involved people will usually take ownership of and responsibility for the success of your endeavors. Boost their dedication to the enterprise using these strategies. Direction - Drive Performance Through Powerful Intentions People are generally motivated to be of service to others when that service helps fulfill a noble or higher purpose. Jesus Christ taught us that, "the greatest among you shall be servants of all"! His lesson was based on the fact that we usually seek ways to make a significant difference in the lives of others. Leadership always describes a vision, that glorious sight of some far-off desirable place or situation the group hopes to discover through their efforts and hard work. By using your strategy to discipline your people to execute and work on the most important, value-adding tasks, you can increase their sense of the organization's strategic intent. Wisdom contends "a picture is worth a thousand words." Why
not map or build a model of your strategic plan - people
find it easier to relate the ideas of strategy when that
strategy is transformed into a roadmap.

Coaching Building Teams and Teamwork A tight knit team is a group of competent individuals who care deeply about each other and are fiercely committed to their mission. They are highly motivated to combining their energy and expertise to achieve the common objective. From our observation and studies on building teams, we have found three primary conditions that have to be met in order to attain higher levels of team performance and member satisfaction. Resources and Commitment Ownership and Heart Learning These three conditions are the heart and soul of teamwork but are not blueprints. Every team is unique, and the requirements and details of its teamwork have to be worked out separately. Let's look closer at condition number two Ownership and Heart. What Kind of Leader Are You? There are literally millions of words written and spoken each week on enlightened leadership yet the fact remains that low morale, high stress and job dissatisfaction continue to be three of the most serious problems facing the workplace. We seem to be so effectively socialized into top down leadership that we find it extremely difficult, if not impossible, to change our autocratic ways. All this in spite of the many workshops and seminars on new leadership paradigms which are rooted in the empowerment of people. Who Is Randy Gage and Why Is He One of My Mentors and Heroes? Who is Randy Gage? I first read about him in a newsletter by his friend, and another of my mentors and heroes, Stuart Goldsmith. Steps to Becoming a Good Leader STEPS TO BECOMING A GOOD LEADER: 1. Develop a master plan. What are your goals? What are the organization's goals? How are you going to reach them? 2. Develop a leadership style. To manage people, you need to know how you are going to do it. Be comfortable with the leadership style you choose, and it will lead to future success. 3. Know the risks. Making any decision has its risks. Know the risks involved and whether the organization can afford to take them. 4. Get the authority you need. You need authority to achieve goals. If you don't have enough, get assertive. Tell your superiors you need more authority to make decisions. 5. Be decisive. Don't get caught saying, "Let me get back to you." Consult staff, but you make the decisions. 6. Be firm. If you believe in your decisions, then stick to them. However, be open to suggestions and be flexible. Extraordinary People in Mediocre Times My grandfather used to speak of the days when people drove the world. It was a time when people were proud to contribute and move society and industry forward at full steam. But, people were proud of themselves! However, before he died, one of his observations was that "we have come to mediocre times."
