Building Future Leaders
As a whole we spend a lot of time filling our minds with various forms of self-improvement. Believe me this is good for us! However, I think what's equally important is the amount of positives that we send to our younger generation. I am certain that I don't have to convince you of the positive results we receive when we "flood" our minds with a good self-improvement book or tape. It really can change our outlook on things. The results that we get are the same that our youth will receive as well. So why don't they take advantage of such resources you ask? It's fairly simple really. Their peer groups as a whole don't know about them. Thus our teens aren't taking advantage of them. A lot of folks out there are cutting our teens short! As such they're turning towards things that in the long run don't lead to fulfillment. This is something I feel pretty strongly about (most likely because it wasn't to long ago that I was still a teen). With this said now the question is what can we do about it? First we have to realize that every one of us was at one time or another in the same boat! We were all teens. Now ask yourself who was there for you when you needed someone to encourage you? Look for a young adult that you can reach out to and encourage. Make yourself a part of that person's testimonial! In addition to helping this person to realize their gifts you'll find extreme personal rewards as you see this person live an enriched life! Life in its simplest form is really about helping others. As Mr. Zig Ziglar says, "You can have everything in life you want if you'll only help enough others get what they want". Now's the time to start my friend. Use your personal testimonial to make a positive impact in another's life. When you do only ask for one thing in return. Make sure that when someone comes along in their life that they do the same. As one we are powerless, but as many we can change the world! One person at a time... Steps to Becoming a Good Leader STEPS TO BECOMING A GOOD LEADER: 1. Develop a master plan. What are your goals? What are the organization's goals? How are you going to reach them? 2. Develop a leadership style. To manage people, you need to know how you are going to do it. Be comfortable with the leadership style you choose, and it will lead to future success. 3. Know the risks. Making any decision has its risks. Know the risks involved and whether the organization can afford to take them. 4. Get the authority you need. You need authority to achieve goals. If you don't have enough, get assertive. Tell your superiors you need more authority to make decisions. 5. Be decisive. Don't get caught saying, "Let me get back to you." Consult staff, but you make the decisions. 6. Be firm. If you believe in your decisions, then stick to them. Act on Some of the Facts Making any decision without having all of the information and facts beforehand can be very tough. I spoke with a young man recently and he told me that some of his professors had changed the rules on him in the administration of his classes. The syllabuses of a couple of his classes had been altered, which switched exam dates. He was also notified of these changes after the semester's grace period. The grace period in which he could get his tuition money back after dropping a course had passed. Because of the changes, he would have two to three exams on one day. Character Traits of Extraordinary Leaders When people make a decision (either consciously or unconsciously) to follow your leadership, they do it primarily because of one of two things: Your Character or your Skills. They want to know if you are the kind of person they want to follow and if you have the skills to take them further. Yes, there are other variables but these are the bulk of the matter.
